Mercedes’ Russell has clenched his second-ever pole position at the Canadian GP after he and Verstappen set identical lap times on the board, a 1m 12.000s lap.

As Russell was the first to claim this lap time, Verstappen was forced to yield and fall into second position for Sunday’s race. McLaren’s Lando Norris completed the top three just two hundreds of a second behind.

This provides the Mercedes driver with his second career pole position, following his first at the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix.

“It feels so good,” said Russell in the post-qualifying interviews out on track.

“So much hard work back at the factories has gone into this and, we said this in Monaco, we’re hoping its the start of something for our season – I think it is.”

From pole to seventh, the gaps were narrow showcasing a tightly-contested qualifying session where the Briton had come out on top. Russell’s teammate, and seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton completed the session seventh two-tenths behind the pole sitter.

With pole in the bag, the leading Mercedes will have to contend with Verstappen into the first corner, on Sunday, as the two share the front row.

Although the former dominant world constructors champions failed to secure a win last year, they have managed to maintain their record of consecutive pole positions.

Statistics from StatsF1.com state Russell’s pole puts the team in their 13th consecutive season where they have scored at least one pole position.
