Alpine’s Esteban Ocon has been given a five-place grid penalty for the Canadian Grand Prix after he caused a collision with his teammate, Pierre Gasly.

Before the race was red-flagged, following Sergio Perez (Red Bull) crash with the Haas duo of Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg, Ocon attempted an ambitious move on Gasly into Portier.

As the two exited the corner, Ocon failed to leave his teammate racing room and the two collided, and the contact launched Ocon’s car up into the air.

The Frenchman, in control of Alpine’s #31 car, was quickly withdrawn from the race restart due tot he damage caused by the incident.

Following the collision, the stewards’ report said:

“The Stewards reviewed video and in-car video evidence and determined that Car 31 attempted to overtake Car 10 at Turn 8. The attempt resulted in the cars coming together, Car 31 being flung into the air and damaging the car.

“As the race was red-flagged shortly thereafter, the cars returned to the pits and Car 31 retired.

“It was clear to us that the collision was caused solely by the overly ambitious overtaking attempt, from too far back, by Car 31 and was therefore wholly to blame for the incident.”

Ocon was slapped with a 10-second time penalty in the Monaco Grand Prix for causing a collision, with Gasly, on the first lap.

However, as the #31 car had retired from the race – due to the contact – this has been upgraded to a five-place grid penalty in the next race he participates in.

“The baseline penalty for causing a collision in this season is a 10-second time penalty,” the stewards continued. “This is what we imposed on Car 31.

“However, given that Car 31 did not finish the race, it will be converted to a drop of 5 grid positions for the next race in which the driver participates.”

Two penalty points have also been added to Ocon’s super licence as a result of the collision, bringing his total of penalty points up to three.
