Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc has become the first Monegasque driver to secure a win, in the Formula 1 world championship, at the Monaco Grand Prix.
After three pole positions, all of which failed to turn into victories, Leclerc has finally done it and secured the win at his home race.
It wasn’t all plain sailing for the winning Monegasque as he had to contend with two race starts, following the crash between Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and the Haas duo of Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg.
As a result of the crash between Perez, Magnussen and Hulkenberg, the race was red-flagged and this allowed Ferrari to change tyres in the pit lane, to meet the mandatory tyre requirement.
Due to the red-flag pit stop, and tyre change, it meant Leclerc did not have to pit again in the race and went on to cruise around Monaco on 75-lap old hard tyres.
From there, Leclerc was untouchable as he led the race from start to finish ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and, Ferrari teammate, Carlos Sainz who finished second and third respectively.
The Monaco-born driver now stands as the first Monegasque driver to win an F1 world championship race, emulating what Louis Charon did, in 1931, when he secured a – unofficial – F1 race win on the streets of Monaco.
