Alexander Albon has signed a new ‘multi-year’ deal with Williams Racing to stay with the Wantage-based team as the sports heads into new regulations.
On Wednesday, Williams Racing confirmed one of their two seats as Albon is set to stay with the team for the foreseeable future having signed a ‘multi-year contract.’
Albon returned to the grid in 2022 with the team, having been dropped by Red Bull Racing in 2021. From there the London-born Thai driver has been the team’s predominant point-scorer compared to teammates Nicholas Latifi and Logan Sargeant.
The extended partnership will see the two parties enter the new power unit regulations, in 2026, aiming to climb the midfield and return to their former glory.
“I am incredibly happy to be remaining with Williams Racing and to continue working with such a talented and dedicated team of people,” said Albon on his contract extension.
“It has been a difficult start to the year but since joining Williams we have made significant progress together and I have seen the huge changes happening behind the scenes to take us back to the front of the grid.
“This is a long-term project that I really believe in and want to play a key role in which is why I have signed a multi-year contract.”
In 2023, Albon was Williams’ leading driver with a 13th-place finish in the drivers standings, with 27 points to his name.
This helped Williams secure seventh place in the constructor’s championship, three points ahead of Alpha Tauri – now rebranded Visa CashApp RB.
According to Williams Team Principal, James Vowels, Albon’s extension has been dubbed a ‘huge vote in confidence’ in the team.
“We are delighted to secure Alex’s long-term future with Williams Racing,” said Vowels. “He has exceptional talent, technical input and dedication to the cause and this is a huge vote of confidence in Williams and the journey back to competitiveness that we are on.”
“Since joining, Alex has consistently demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure, and signing him for the long-term is a big piece of the puzzle of moving us up the grid.”
It remains unclear who will secure the second seat, next season, which is currently occupied by American driver Sargeant.
