McLaren’s Lando Norris has finally secured his first-ever Formula 1 Grand Prix win, in Miami, ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

The duck has finally been broken for Norris as the British driver secured his maiden victory after 110 grand prix starts.

Norris’s previous attempt to win a race came back in Sochi, Russia, in 2021 but he lost out for failing to pit when the track conditions turned wet in the latter stages.

Fortunately, Norris did not face such issues this weekend as he finally climbed to the top step of the podium for the first time in his career.

This win marks the first win for McLaren since Daniel Ricciardo won in 2021, in Monza, Italy, after both Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and Verstappen crashed out.

“About time eh?” commented Norris, in Parc Ferme, after the race. “What a race, yeah it’s been a long time coming. Finally, I’ve been able to do it. I’m so happy for my whole team, I finally delivered for them.

“Long day, tough race, but finally on top and I’m over the moon.”

The win was Norris’s redemption for Saturday’s sprint race where the Briton was forced to retire on the first lap, after colliding with Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll at the opening corner.

Following Norris’s win, Verstappen and several other drivers congratulated Norris on his maiden victory either on track or in parc ferme.

“You win, you lose, I think we’re all used to that in racing right?” Said Verstappen in Parc Ferme. “Today was a bit tricky. We were pulling away but not like it should be.”

“When we made the pit stop, I heard what the lap time the McLarens had and I was like ‘that’s pretty quick.’ I’m very happy for Lando, it’s not going to be his last one – he definitely deserves it today.”

Verstappen and Leclerc finished just behind the winning McLaren, in second and third respectively.

This win also marks the first under the command of Team Principal, Andrea Stella who took over the reigns when Andreas Seidl departed for Sauber – then Alfa Romeo Sauber.

Norris is now the third driver to win a race other than Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Verstappen this season.
