Ogier secures sixth record-breaking win at WRC Rally de Portugal

Ogier secures sixth record-breaking win at WRC Rally de Portugal

13th May 2024 0 By Kamron Kent

Sebastien Ogier has secured his sixth victory at the World Rally Championship’s Rally de Portugal, a feat never achieved before in its history.

Heading into the final day of the weekend, the drivers and teams had to contend with yet another challenge as they jostled for rally position: Fog.

However, the reduced visibility didn’t stop Tanak from challenging the win as he secured the stage win, on the first pass of the iconic Fafe stage.

Despite Tanak’s challenge to secure his first win since Chile last year, and his first for Hyundai, it was Ogier who stood victorious.

The Frenchman is now the most successful driver in Portugal having beaten his record of five rally wins in the country, a feat he previously held alongside Markku Alén.

Rally de Portugal’s Top 10

After Ogier inherited the rally lead following Kalle Rovanpera’s crash on Saturday’s Montim 1 test, the eight-time world champion had to keep two hungry Hyundai’s at bay.

The French driver completed the weekend with a 7.s lead over Hyundai’s Ott Tanak who finished second. They were joined by Hyundai’s championship leader Thierry Neuville as the Belgian completed the weekend in third.

M-Sport Ford’s Adrien Fourmaux completed the weekend best of the rest, in fourth place, with a comfortable position in between both Hyundai’s of Neuville and Daniel Sordo (fifth).

Fourmaux’s teammate, Gregoire Munster met an unfortunate end to his rally weekend as he became beached on the penultimate test. The Luxembourg driver cut too much around a sharp left-hander which spun around his Rally 1 Puma.

Toyota’s Elfyn Evans was forced to settle for sixth place in the standings.

The Welshman’s Rally1 Yaris suffered overheating issues on Stage 21 (Cabeceiras de Basto 2) and he was forced to complete the stage in EV mode. Understandably, he was reluctant to explain what happened when he reached the time control.

WRC2 completed the remaining positions inside the top 10. Nikolay Gryazin was the leading driver in seventh. As it was not his nominated event it meant Jan Solans secured victory in Portugal, for WRC2, in eighth overall.

He was followed closely by Joshua McErlean, 6.4s behind, in ninth. Lauri Joona completed the top 10.

Takamoto Katsuta and Kalle Rovanpera

Having retired from Saturday’s action, both Toyota’s were entered back into the action for Super Sunday.

While both Takamoto Katsuta and Kalle Rovanpera finished at the bottom of the overall leaderboard, in 29th and 31st respectively, the two continued to secure points for the rally weekend.

Katsuta and Rovanpera secured fifth and sixth-place finishes, respectively, on Sunday’s timesheets. As a result, it meant Katsuta drove away with three points while Rovanpera collected two points.
