Drain cover brings end to F1 Morning Test on Day 2
22nd February 2024Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc topped the timing boards as the fastest driver as the morning test was prematurely ended due to a loose drain cover.
Thursday marked the second day of testing, of the annual three-day test, at the Bahrain International Circuit. However, the morning test did not run to its expected run time.
Halfway through the morning session, a loose drain cover was dislodged from the track and this prompted a red flag stop – the first of the test. After nearly an hour under red flag conditions, race control opted to end the session an hour early to allow the track to be fixed.
Due to the lost hour, the afternoon session has been extended to incorporate this which will now run from 2pm to 7pm local time (11am – 4pm GMT).
As a result of the premature end to the morning test, it meant Leclerc reigned as the fastest driver with a lap time of 1:31.750, half a second quicker than McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Williams’ Logan Sargeant who set the second and third fastest times.
Red Bull’s Sergio Perez got his first taste of the RB20 on the Bahrain circuit and could only manage to put in the fourth quickest time, two-tenths faster than Alonso but over a second behind Leclerc.
Mercedes’ outgoing seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton led the bottom five drivers with a 1:33.225, in sixth place.
Guanyu Zhou (Stake), Pierre Gasly (Alpine), Nico Hulkenberg (Haas) and Yuki Tsunoda (RB) rounded out the top 10 in seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th respectively.
