Sainz on top as Day 2 of F1 2024 testing comes to close

22nd February 2024 0 By Kamron Kent

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz stands as the fastest driver after the second day of testing, with five hours of testing in the afternoon session.

After the morning session was cut short, when the Bahrain International Circuit required immediate repairs to a loose drain cover, the afternoon test was extended by an hour to incorporate the time lost.

As such, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc (sixth-fastest) got half an hour of testing – running a replacement floor – during the afternoon session before the Scuderia swapped over to Sainz.

When the sun, and chequered flag, fell on Bahrain at the end of the second day of testing it was Ferrari’s Sainz who stood on top of the timing boards. Sainz was the first driver to go under the 1m 30 mark with a lap time of 1:29.921.

The Spaniard was quickly followed by Sergio Perez (Red Bull) and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) who occupied second and third. Perez went on to put in the most mileage across the day with 129 laps completed, six more than Hamilton (123 laps).

Norris, who previously held the second fastest lap on the first day of testing, could only manage fourth at best with his lap time 1.3s behind his former teammate’s best.

With a fast lap on the softer C4 tyre – like Sainz before him – RB’s Daniel Ricciardo only managed to secure the fifth fastest time, in the dying embers of testing.

Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), Esteban Ocon (Alpine) and Valtteri Bottas (Stake) occupied seventh, eighth and ninth respectively.

Williams Logan Sargeant, who had the full day to himself like Perez and Hamilton, could only put in a lap time for 11th at best. However, he managed to complete the day without issue, unlike yesterday’s spin and driveshaft problems.

Kevin Magnussen rounded out the 10 drivers, in the afternoon session, down in 15th, six seconds behind Sainz’s time with the team clearly focusing on mileage and reliability over overall speed.

That’s all for the article; Sainz on top as Day 2 of F1 2024 testing comes to close
