Mercedes F1 Technical Director, James Allison has signed a ‘long-term’ contract with the once-dominant silver arrows as the sport heads to new rule changes in 2026.

Allison’s contract extension will keep the 55-year-old with the team as their Technical Director. The team hopes this will reinforce their technical leadership as the sport continues to make its way towards a major rule change in 2026.

The continued appointment follows on from Mercedes Team Principal and CEO, Toto Wolff’s contract extension – earlier this week – which keeps him at the team for another three years.

On the appointment, Allison said:

“F1 has brought me a lot of good fortune, but none greater than answering Toto’s call to join Mercedes in 2017.

“It is a great privilege to continue this adventure, working alongside brilliant colleagues and fighting together for championship success.”

Allison joined the Mercedes team in 2017 as their Technical Director and oversaw continued title success during their impressive run of championship glory from 2014 to 2021.

The Technical Director played his part to oversee four drivers and five constructors titles during his stay.

Allison was soon promoted to Chief Technical Officer which provided him the responsibility for long-term strategy and the INEOS Britannia America’s Cup project.

However, he dropped back down into his Technical Director role in April last season as the team embarked on their first winless season since 2011.

Mercedes’ Team Principal, Wolff, was ‘thrilled’ Allison extended his contract with the team, describing the Technical Director as the ‘most impressive technical leader’ in the sport. Wolff said:

“I am thrilled that James has committed his long-term future to the team. Put simply, he is the most impressive technical leader in our sport.

“His gladiator spirit, along with his knowledge, experience, and determination, make him second-to-none. His influence and impact, however, goes so much further than that. Since joining in 2017, he has been a key ally and sparring partner for me personally.

“We can challenge each other openly and honestly; an embodiment of the ‘tough love’ culture of the team that is vital in helping us all perform at our very best.”

That’s all for the article; James Allison signs long-term contract with Mercedes!
