F1 2023 Report Card: A winless year for Mercedes

F1 2023 Report Card: A winless year for Mercedes

7th December 2023 0 By Kamron Kent

It has been a season to forget for Mercedes-AMG F1 as the team suffered their first winless season since 2011, but they did have some positive moments.

2023 was yet another misery for the Brackley-based Mercedes F1 team as the team failed to secure a single win in the season. This means their last win was at the hands of George Russell during the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in 2022.

Without a win on the board in 2023, it provides the team with their first winless season since 2011 where the team had Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg at the helm of their challengers.

However, it wasn’t just a winless season for the team as seven-time world champion, Sir Lewis Hamilton, continued on with his winless streak meaning the #44 Mercedes’ most recent win remains in Saudi Arabia, in 2021.

Fans would’ve hoped that the most successful driver in the sport would have returned to winning ways this season, especially after the team reverted to somewhat traditional side-pods in Monaco. However, it was not meant to be.

Despite this, there were some good points of their 2023 season.

Mercedes did come close to securing a win in Singapore with a late, aggressive switch to the Medium tyres which allowed the two Mercedes to put the pressure on McLaren’s Lando Norris and Ferraris Carlos Sainz. Later won by the Ferrari Spaniard.

The team also went on to secure second place in the constructors championship. At one point you would’ve believed the team could secure the runner-up spot with a number of races to go. Ferrari’s late resurgence put a damper on that belief and only four points separated the two. By the end of the season finale, only three points separated Mercedes in second from Ferrari in third.

Hamilton also returned to pole position this season with his superb pole in Hungary, the same venue where the team secured their first in 2022. This increased the seven-time world champion’s overall career poles to an impressive 104.
