Three teams rumoured to have breached 2022 Cost Cap regulations

Cost Cap déjà vu as it has been reported that three F1 teams are rumoured to find themselves being non-compliant with the 2022 Cost Cap regulations. 

Since 2021, all 10 teams involved with Formula 1 have been subjected to the cost cap regulations which have been introduced to regulate the grid’s spending. This was to provide an opportunity for those who were financially worse off to tighten the gap on those out in front. 

According to the Italian side of Motorsport.com, it has been rumoured that three teams will be found to be non-compliant with the regulations when the certificates of compliance arrive, sometime in July.

It remains fairly unknown to which of the teams are speculated to have breached the cost cap, and if last year was anything to go by we may not have any confirmation until after the summer break at the end of August. 

The likelihood of punishments may follow suit based on F1’s previous actions for first-time offenders if those who have broken the cost cap have not previously failed to comply with the regulations. 

However, F1 may also look to take on a much harsher stance on those who fail to comply as it will mark the second year in a row in which teams have failed to remain within the budget – if the rumours are true. 

Following on from the first-ever year with the cost cap being enforced, the first audit was completed in 2022 and saw most of the teams being compliant with the regulations. 

However, Red Bull, Williams and Aston Martin were found to have breached the regulations with the former being worse off than Aston Martin and Williams. 

Red Bull were found to have committed a minor overspend in 2021 and was handed a $7 million fine and a 10% reduction in their wind tunnel allowance, which spans a 12-month period.

Despite this, the reduction in wind tunnel time has little to no effect on Red Bull’s performance as their current championship contender, the RB19, has secured every race win of the 2023 season. 

Red Bull’s Team Principal, Christian Horner has previously stated the reduction will likely impact them in the second half of the season. However, the team has now seemingly switched their focus to their 2024 challenger – the supposed RB20 – as both the 2023 Drivers and Constructors championships look to be in the bag. 

On the other side of the 2022 breaches, Aston Martin and Wiliams were only found to have committed ‘procedural breaches.’
