Nyck de Vries breaks silence on Instagram following Alpha Tauri departure
20th July 2023Nyck de Vries has finally broken his silence on social media after the Dutch driver posted on Instagram following his departure from Alpha Tauri.
On Tuesday, July 11, 2023, it was announced that Alpha Tauri and de Vries were to go their own ways as the Faenza-based team brought Daniel Ricciardo back into the fold to replace him. The decision came after a string of poor performances which led the higher-ups at Red Bull to show him the door in place of the Australian.
The news quickly fell into the community, and global news outlets, shortly after the British Grand Prix where the Dutch 28-year-old finished 17th, and last of the running drivers.
De Vries went radio silent following the announcement and hasn’t been heard since the news exploded out into the world. However, on Wednesday, the Dutch driver finally peeled out of the shadows with a post on Instagram.
In the post de Vries said:
“A short note from me… After recent events, I decided to take some time for myself away from social media, which I will continue to do.
“I would like to thank Red Bull and Scuderia AlphaTauri for the opportunity to live my dream. Of course it hurts that the F1 chance I dreamed of for so long ended prematurely. But life is not a destination, it’s a journey, and sometimes you have to take the hard road to get where you want to be.”
Despite the Dutchman’s short time in the sport, which spanned 10 races from Bahrain to Great Britain, de Vries has thanked his supporters for their support.
“I am grateful for our privileged lives, proud of our journey and my family. This is just another experience, we move on and look forward to the next chapter,” De Vries continued. “Thank you to everyone for your kind and encouraging messages in the past week. It’s been heart-warming to feel your support.
“I received some interesting articles about things I’ve said in the last week. For clarity, I haven’t spoken to any media and for the time being I’ll enjoy some me time. Wishing you all a nice summer”
At the time of de Vries’ shocking exit, two races before the summer break, the Dutchman struggled to come to grips with his AT04 and failed to score any points in a somewhat uncompetitive car. The 28-year-old also had two in-race incidents which resulted in an early retirement with collisions and accidents in Australia and Azerbaijan respectively.
Some fans believed the decision to be the correct one from Red Bull but others feel as if the axing was premature, 10 races into a single season.
At the point of his departure, de Vries currently sits 20th in the driver’s standings and is tied up on zero points with Williams Racing’s American rookie, Logan Sargeant who is 19th.
