Daniel Ricciardo to replace Nyck de Vries for remainder of F1 season
11th July 2023Red Bull’s reserve driver, Daniel Ricciardo, is set to get a second chance at Formula 1 as the Australian driver will replace Nyck de Vries ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
After a poor start to his Formula 1 career, de Vries has been let go from Alpha Tauri and will be replaced by Red Bull’s reserve driver Ricciardo for the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix.
The Dutchman’s seat has been threatened for a while after a string of poor performances in the early stages of the F1 season, and it has been heavily suggested that a lack of improvements would see him thrown out.
Following the announcement, the team said:
“Daniel is back! @danielricciardo, on loan from @redbullracing, will be racing for us for the remainder of the #F1 season, starting from the Hungarian Grand Prix.”
On his return to the F1 grid, Ricciardo said:
“I’m stoked to be back on track with the Red Bull family!”
Suspicions about de Vries’ ability to remain in F1 have not been something that has come out of the blue.
Ricciardo was reportedly at Alpha Tauri for a seat fitting, in May, and it was suspected this may be due to an upcoming change in the team’s driver line-up.
Red Bull’s motorsport advisor, Dr Helmut Marko, had reportedly issued the Dutch driver with a ‘yellow card’ after a torrid start.
Ahead of the replacement, Alpha Tauri’s outgoing Team Principle, Franz Tost said:
“I’m very pleased to welcome Daniel back into the team. There’s no doubt about his driving skills, and he already knows many of us, so his integration will be easy and straightforward. The team will also profit a lot from his experience, as he is an eight-time Formula 1 Grand Prix winner.
“I would like to thank Nyck for his valuable contribution during his time with Scuderia AlphaTauri and I wish him all the best for the future.”
Ricciardo, who is set to replace the Dutch driver, has spent the last seven months on the sidelines alongside Red Bull Racing as the team’s reserve driver. During his time in the role, the Australian driver has undergone simulator, commercial and marketing duties.
This came after the Australian struggled to compete at McLaren, in 2021 and 2022, and was heavily overshadowed by Lando Norris who outscored the eight-time grand prix winner in both seasons.
That’s all for the article; Daniel Ricciardo to replace Nyck de Vries for remainder of F1 season !
