Tanak to start Rally Estonia with five-minute penalty

M-Sport Ford’s Ott Tanak is expected to start his home event, Rally Estonia, with a five-minute time penalty after the team changed the Estonian’s engine.

On home soil, the Estonian topped the first pass of Thursday morning’s shakedown run but his Puma was struck with engine issues at the end of the pre-event test.

When Tanak and his co-driver, Martin Järveoja, returned to the service park the M-Sport Ford team concluded a new engine was required prior to the official start later on, on Thursday evening.

According to the FIA regulations, it is permitted that teams can replace an engine between scrutineering and the first time control. However, a five-minute time penalty will be imposed on those involved by the Clerk of the course.

Ahead of the rally, Tanak currently sits fourth in the drivers standings with 98 points to his name, behind reigning champion Kalle Rovanpera, Elfyn Evans and Sebasiten Ogier in first, second and third respectively.

While the five-minute penalty will hinder Tanak’s attempts to win on home ground, early on, the full rally weekend remains ahead of them and there’s plenty of opportunities to find a path to victory.

The Estonian has secured wins in his home country on four previous occasions.

However, he will have to overcome Rovanpera who remains in great form after he set the pace during the pre-event shakedown test.

That’s all for the article; Tanak to start Rally Estonia with five-minute penalty!
