Moto3 Argentinian Grand Prix: Sergio Garcia wins after final corner overtake
3rd April 2022Gaviota GASGAS Aspar Team’s Sergio Garcia secured his first Moto3 win of the year, in the Argentinian Grand Prix, as the Spaniard took the lead of the race into the final corner on the final lap.
How the race unfolded…
It was brilliant start from the pole sitter, Garcia as the Spaniard led the pack around the first corner. By the end of the first lap the field travelled around the track in a fairly uniformed manner.
BOE SKX’s Ana Carrasco looked to have a mechanical issue as she ventured slowly around the circuit. On the second lap, Izan Guevara gained the lead of the race as Sterilgarda Husqvarna Max’s Ayumu Sasaki took his long lap penalty as soon as he could, after he was deemed to ride irresponsibly in Indonesia.
In the early stages of the race, the grand prix was fairly neat, tidy and quiet as riders challenged for track position in a calm manner. However, on lap six there was a yellow flag shown in the second sector.
CFMOTO Racing’s Xavier Artigas was the reason the yellow flag was flown as he was found off his bike at the long lap area.
On lap seven, Deniz Oncu was given a long lap penalty after he was found to have taken a shortcut at turn nine. Soon after, Carrasco crashed out of the race. Two laps later, Adrian Fernandez was also given a long lap penalty after he took a shortcut at turn nine.
On lap 10, Guevara suffered a mechanical failure was forced to retire from the race on lap 10. Shortly after Rivacold Sniper’s Andrea Migno quickly took the lead of the race ahead of Garcia. But it wasn’t long until the Aspar pole sitter returned to the lead of the race
Riccardo Rossi was given a warning, on lap 13, for exceeding track limits and ran the risk of gaining a long lap penalty. Two laps later, Leopard Racing’s Tatsuki Suzuki was also given a track limits warning.
Six laps remained of the Moto3 race as Red Bull KTM’s Jaume Masia and Migno came together. Into the penultimate corner, Migno went down the inside line but caught the side of Masia and both riders vaulted from their bikes as their machines went to ground. Migno walked off to the pit lane as Masia tried to return to the race before he rode into the pit lane, a lap later.
Despite leading the race for some time, Garcia was put under pressure by the current championship leader, Foggia.
On the penultimate lap, Foggia took the lead of the race after the italian committed to a move down the inside of the penultimate corner. Despite Garcia’s best attempts the Spaniard couldn’t regain his position immediately.
Garcia finally retaliated as the Spaniard and Foggia grinded against each other into the final corner. The Spaniard came out ahead of the two battling riders as they crossed the line to secure his first win of the season.
