MotoGP Argentina Grand Prix: Qualifying Round-Up
3rd April 2022MotoGP and its junior categories will embark in an intense race as the motorbike series’ compete in Argentina – despite earlier issues.
MotoGP and its junior categories, Moto3 and Moto2, suffered delays this week after the sports freight struggled to get across to Argentina for Friday practice. This forced the series’ to conduct a ‘super Saturday,’ cramming in practice and qualifying into one day.
Moto3
MT Helmets’ Japanese rider, Ryusei Yamanaka set the benchmark for the remaining grid to beat with a 1:49.400 lap. This put Yamanaka top of Q1, ahead of Angeluss MTA Team’s Stefano Nepa by 0.077 seconds.
However, this time was soon beaten by 13 riders in Q2, as Gaviota GASGAS Aspar’s Sergio Garcia topped the timing boards with a 1:48.429 – 0.171 seconds faster than Sterilgarda Husqvarna Max’s Ayumu Sasaki.
This means Garcia put in the quickest lap to put himself on pole position while the fastest rider in Q1 will start P14.
Moto2
American Racing’s Cameron Beaubier set the fastest time in Q1 with a 1:44.132 which put the American rider top of the timing sheets 0.024 seconds ahead of Yahama VR46’s Manuel Gonzalez. The top four drivers from Beaubier to Italtrans Racing Team’s Lorenzo Dalla Porta were all separated by one-tenth of a second.
However, Beaubier couldn’t beat his time in Q2 and was soon beaten by MB Conveyors’ Spaniard, Fermin Aldeguer, who put in a quick 1:43.306 lap which was 0.150 seconds faster than Red Bull KTM’s Augusto Fernandez in second-place.
As a result, this means Aldeguer will line up on pole position ahead of Fernandez and ELF Marc VDS’s Tony Arbolino.
MotoGP
Repsol’s Pol Espargaro set the first target for the MotoGP riders to beat, in Q1, after he secured the fastest lap of the session (1:38.501) to put himself on the top of the leaderboard. However, his gap was only marginal after LCR Honda’s Takaaki Nakagami was only 0.022 seconds behind the Spanish rider.
When the sport ventured into Q2 territory, the top time was soon beaten by Espargaro’s older brother, Aprilia’s Alexis Espargaro who topped the time sheets with a 1:37.688. This then demoted P. Espargaro down to a fourth-place starting position with Jorge Martin (Pramac Racing) and Luca Marini (Mooney VR46 Racing) separating the brothers respectively.
By the end of Q2, A. Espargaro’s time couldn’t be beaten despite the riders best attempts and this meant Aprilia secured their first ever MotoGP pole position ahead of the Argentinian GP.
