Toyota’s Kalle Rovanpera has secured the win in Rally Sweden after teammate Elfyn Evans crashed out this morning.
How the day unfolded…
After an issue yesterday, when Elfyn Evans collided with a snowbank on the final corner of the 16th stage, the Welshman was handed a 10-second penalty for leaving the stage road.
In an attempt to regain his lost time, and to fight his teammate, Rovanpera, the British driver pushed too much. As a result, Evans lost control of his car around a left-hand corner as his Toyota Yaris went into a slide, which he couldn’t control. His car was able to continue but the front of his Yaris was ruined.
This meant Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville and Toyota’s Esapekka Lappi could reap the rewards of Evans’ misfortune. However, Neuville – who inherited second-place – was still over 20 seconds behind Rovanpera.
The relieved pressure from Evans incident meant Rovanpera could drive comfortably through the final stages, retaining over 20 seconds in hand to his closest rivals as the championship went into the Wolf Power Stage.
With Rally Sweden all-but assured to be in Rovanpera’s hands, the final stage fight primarily went down to Neuville and Lappi as the two were separated by three seconds.
Lappi was the third-last driver out onto the power stage and he completed the stage in 6 minutes, 37 seconds. After Lappi completed the stage, Neuville blasted out onto the icy conditions to try and cement his second-place finish.
Despite his best efforts, Neuville secured his second-place finish as he completed the stage while his Hyundai teammate Ott Tanak secured the power stage win.
Podium:
- Kalle Rovanpera, Toyota
- Thierry Neuville, Hyundai
- Esapekka Lappi, Toyota
