Toyota’s Kalle Rovanpera overtook Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville as the Finnish driver put in a great drive on the snow-covered conditions in Rally Sweden’s second day.

How the day unfolded…

Neuville occupied the top spot going into Saturday after he put in an impressive performance in the latter stages of Friday afternoon.

However, Rovanpera picked up the scraps as Neuville couldn’t make it into the top five for saturdays opening stage eight, Brattby 1. This meant Neuville’s lead melted away, dropping to fourth by stage 11.

Toyota’s Esapekka Lappi put in a great performance yesterday and claimed his first stage win, in his rookie debut, yesterday morning (stage two). On the eighth stage, Lappi only missed another stage win as Elfyn Evans won by only 0.4 seconds

Despite a crash in the second stage of the weekend, M-Sport Ford’s Craig Breen put in a stunning performance on the 11th stage. The Irishman pipped Rovanpera to the stage win by only 0.2 seconds. However, it wasn’t much in the way of consolidation as the Irish driver was still down in 39th, amongst the WRC2 and WRC3 cars.

As the championship looped back to Brattby 2, Evans put in another performance to secure his third stage win of the weekend. Sunday looked to be a fight of the Toyota’s as the championship went into its final day.

By the end of the second day in Sweden, Rovanpera topped the timing boards ahead of Evans by 8.3 seconds.
