Isack Hadjar to start Belgian Grand Prix from the back of the grid

Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar will start from the back of the grid after the team introduced several new power unit components to his RB22.

Spa-Francorchamps is traditionally one of the best circuits for overtaking, making it a popular venue for teams to take engine-related penalties in the hope of recovering positions during the race. 

After nine rounds of the 2026 championship, reliability has been a factor in this season, with engine problems affecting race results and championship positions.

In Canada and Barcelona, both Mercedes’ George Russell and Kimi Antonelli faced retirements when their power units died on them mid-race. However, whilst others were able to continue to race, some have now exceeded their allocations of power unit components.

Red Bull Racing is no exception, with both Max Verstappen and Hadjar taking new components ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix. However, the four-time world champion still has components in his allocation and will not have to serve a grid penalty.

Both Hadjar and Verstappen will be fitted with a new internal combustion engine (ICE), turbocharger (TC) and exhausts to their 2026 championship contenders.

It will be the fifth internal combustion engine, turbocharger and exhaust for the Frenchman, out of an allowed four for each of the components, in relation to the sporting regulations.

Under the regulations, the first power unit component used beyond the allocated limit results in a 10-place grid penalty, with subsequent changes carrying five-place drops. 

Hadjar has battled reliability issues throughout the season.

His first power unit failure came in the opening round in Australia, with further engine-related problems in Monaco, where a loss of power compromised his podium finish, before a post-race review took that away.

He will now join the likes of McLaren’s world champion, Lando Norris, who is set to serve his own penalty this weekend.
