Audi aiming to be F1 title contenders by 2030

Audi’s Team Principal Mattia Binotto has made a daring ambition for the four-ringed squad to be competitive enough to compete for world titles by 2030.

Audi has enjoyed a steady start to its Formula 1 career, having taken over from Sauber’s position on the grid this season.

With the new regulations well and truly underway now, introduced this season, Binotto has said he wants the team to be able to fight for world championships by 2030.

The team boss knows it will not be an overnight change, to be fighting at the front. Binotto sees 2026 and 2027 as ‘years of construction’ before being able to make a leap in quality in 2028.

Speaking to Autosport, Head of Audi F1 Project and the F1 team boss, Binotto, said:

“We’ve actually set ourselves a goal that extends well beyond 2026 and 2027. Our target is 2030: we want to build a team capable of competing for the world championship.

“We know there will be important milestones along this journey. The first, for us, will likely be 2028, when we expect to make a further leap in quality.”

“That’s why I see 2026 and 2027 primarily as years of construction, rather than years judged solely on racing results.”

Audi currently sits ninth overall, third from the bottom, with Aston Martin and Cadillac below them in the constructors’ championship.

The four-ringed squad currently have six points to their name, courtesy of their less-experienced driver, Gabriel Bortoleto, who is in his sophomore year in the sport.

Bortoleto’s more experienced teammate, Nico Hulkenberg, is yet to get off the mark in terms of points, currently 19th overall ahead of Cadillac’s Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez, and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, respectively.
