The British Grand Prix is almost upon us, in which the 22 drivers will compete over 52 laps at the Silverstone circuit.

In most recent events, the British GP has featured rain of some sort, with it coming last year mid-race, producing a complicated decision around tyre strategy. However, it seems like this weekend will see a completely dry event.

With a 20-second average loss in the pit lane, according to Pirelli, it puts the emphasis on which tyre strategy can help maximise point potential, podium finishes or the chance at the win.

So, what are the tyre strategies available ahead of the British Grand Prix?

Tyre strategies

According to Pirelli, it looks like the one-stop strategy will be the preferred option across the board, but all three tyre compounds could be in play on Sunday.

The fastest option looks to be the medium-hard strategy, with the drivers opting to stop on laps 24-30 for the hard compounds. A second variation – but more aggressive option – for the medium compounds is to end on the soft tyres, with an expected stop to be held on laps 29-35.

Alternatively, the drivers could opt to start on the hard compounds, running until laps 28-34 to swap onto the mediums.

Pirelli’s final option allows the teams to run a soft-hard strategy, with the soft-starters running until laps 16-22 to swap onto the hards until the checkered flag.

Tyre sets

For most of the top 10, they only have one set of hard and medium compound tyres. The only exception to this is the Red Bull duo. Both Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar have a set of hards and two sets of mediums.

This means the two Red Bull drivers can play based on the situation, allowing a more aggressive strategy, perhaps running a medium-hard-medium or a medium-medium-hard strategy, if an early or late safety car comes in.

Even though the one-stopper is the preferred strategy.

However, for those further down, the strategy can be played in any way, which could increase their chances of getting more points. Those in the bottom 12 have sets of softs, medium and hards available, but some are limited to a couple of sets.
