During the 17-lap sprint race around the iconic Silverstone circuit, Perez was given a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision with Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso.

The incident occurred at turn three, on lap two, untelevised due to the hectic action out on the track.

This incident prompted a brief yellow flag, but no virtual or full safety car was needed as both parties managed to continue on, albeit at the back of the field.

However, the FIA has confirmed the stewards’ reasoning for the Mexican’s penalty.

According to the stewards, Perez was trying to overtake Alonso on the inside of turn three, but the Mexican driver’s front axle was not along the mirror of Alonso’s car.

As such, the two made contact, with Perez hitting the right-rear of Alonso’s Aston Martin, which resulted in a spin for the the two-time world champion.

The officials confirmed that they believed Perez was wholly at fault for the incident and slapped him with a 10-second time penalty. In their report, they said:

“Car 11 [Perez] attempted to overtake Car 14 [Alonso] on the inside of Turn 3.  However, Car 11 had not established its front axle at least alongside the mirror of Car 14 prior to and at the apex. Car 11 made contact with the right-rear of Car 14, causing Car 14 to spin.

“The Stewards determined that Car 11 was wholly at fault for the collision and therefore imposed the standard of a 10-second time penalty.”

Perez eventually finished the race a lap down from the leader, 22nd overall, whilst Alonso was close to being lapped. However, the Aston Martin driver finished on the lead lap, in 20th, 1m 31.872s adrift of Mercedes’ Sprint race winner, Kimi Antonelli.
