Antonelli has claimed his fifth career pole position at the British Grand Prix as the Italian driver finished qualifying with pole position, rounding out a successful Saturday for the Italian driver.
The Mercedes championship leader took his first career sprint victory on Saturday afternoon, pipping Ferrari’s Hamilton to the chequered flag at the Silverstone circuit.
In a similar instance to Sprint Qualifying, Antonelli couldn’t threaten the top positions in the first third of qualifying, standing in seventh at best, behind Racing Bull’s Arvid Lindblad. However, the Italian was able to bounce back in Q2 and Q3, claiming the fastest lap across both thirds.
Antonelli pipped Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 0.175 seconds, with Hamilton unable to make inroads on the Italian, sitting 0.347 seconds further back, in third.

Mercedes’ championship contender, George Russell, finished in fourth place, fortunate enough to continue after his Q1 excursion. The #63 locked up on his first timed run of qualifying, understeering off the circuit at Luffield, skipping across the gravel and into the barrier at turn seven.
With only minimal damage to his front wing, still attached to his W17, Russell managed to slowly get his car back onto the track and return to the pits for inspection and repairs. He was quickly out for another timed run, besting 10th fastest in Q1, before improving to fourth in Q2.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen could only best seventh, behind both his teammate, Isack Hadjar, and McLaren’s Lando Norris, in fifth and sixth, respectively. The Dutchman wasn’t too pleased with his car across qualifying, with the four-time world champion calling its performance a ‘disaster’ and ‘unbelievable.’
