The FIA has confirmed why they issued Williams’ Alexander Albon with a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision at the British Grand Prix.

Albon may have retired from the British Grand Prix late on in the race, but the Williams driver’s race was already done early on after the start, having collided with Haas’ Oliver Bearman at Brooklands.

Following the incident, Albon was forced to return to the pits for repairs, slapping on a set of hard tyres before later retiring from the race.

The FIA had slapped the Williams driver with a 10-second time penalty for the incident after the stewards ruled he was ‘wholly at fault’ for the collision.

FIA’s steward had found that Albon locked up on the inside of turn six, and understeered into Haas of Bearman, resulting in the Briton spinning out. The stewards claimed Albon was not in ‘driving in a fully controlled manner’ and issued him with the standard 10-second time penalty.

In their report, the stewards said:

“Car 23 attempted to overtake Car 87 on the inside of Turn 6. While doing so, the driver of Car 23 locked the left-front wheel and understeered into the rear-left tyre of Car 87, causing Car 87 to spin.

“The Stewards determined that Car 23 was not driving in a fully controlled manner from entry to the apex of the corner and therefore did not satisfy the requirements of the Driving Standards Guidelines for an inside overtake. Car 23 was wholly at fault for the collision.”

Whilst Albon retired on lap 43, Bearman could only finish the British GP 13th overall, ahead of his teammate Esteban Ocon and behind the other Williams of Carlos Sainz, in 14th and 12th, respectively.
