Mercedes summoned for their Right of Review against Gasly penalties
18th June 2026Mercedes has officially been given their summons to appear before the stewards after lodging a right of review against the penalties of the Monaco Grand Prix.

During the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, it was reported that Mercedes had lodged a right of review following the events that transpired at the Monaco Grand Prix, at the beginning of June, in respect to the stewards’ decision against Alpine’s Pierre Gasly.
At the race in the Principality, several drivers had been found to have sped in the pit lane, including Gasly. It was revealed that there was an error in the way speed limits were measured in the pit lane.
Alpine recently stood successful in their bid to overturn their penalties, awarding Gasly his third-place finish on the road.
Mercedes F1 Team Principal, Toto Wolff, confirmed they were assessing the situation during the Barcelona weekend, asking the FIA to look at remedies for Russell’s infringement. During the team principal’s press conference, he said:
“Now we are assessing, as we speak, what the Gasly situation does for George. Obviously there are certain timing restraints. We wouldn’t appeal the Gasly result, certainly, but we would like the FIA to look at what could be the remedies for George’s race.”
As such, the team has now lodged a right of review, which is set to be held this Saturday, June 20, at 9am CEST, with the meeting set to be held virtually through a video conference.
So, why are Mercedes chasing this?
Their championship contender, George Russell, was slapped with a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane during the Monaco Grand Prix.
However, the Briton was not able to serve his penalty correctly after the team’s mechanics worked on the car during the penalty. As such, Russell was later given a drive-through penalty after a Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed out and caused a red flag. Having served his penalty, the #63 Mercedes fell out of the points, recovering to 12th overall.
Without that penalty, Russell’s finishing position in Monaco could be greatly impacted, having run third on the road at the restart.
This hearing is set to be held in two parts, with the first part set to identify if the admissibility of the petition is admissible, with a ‘significant and relevant new element which was unavailable to the stewards at the time of the Decision concerned.’
