Mercedes’ rising star, Antonelli, has extended his championship lead after securing his third consecutive race win at the Miami GP. The young Italian now sits at the top of the table on 100 points, with teammate George Russell following closely behind on 80 points, five points away from a single race win buffer.
It marks the first time in F1 history that a driver has achieved their first three pole positions and converted them into race wins on each occasion, from their very first race win.
However, the final classification was not declared at the chequered flag as two drivers, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, were under investigation for separate incidents during the race.
For Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, the four-time world champion was given a five-second time penalty for crossing the pit exit line. It was deemed that the front-left tyre of Verstappen’s RB23 had crossed over the white line, and the Dutchman was in violation of the sporting code.
This dropped him down to his final finishing position of fifth, the same position he took when he took the chequered flag.
In Leclerc’s case, the Monegasque was handed a drive-through penalty for exceeding track limits without justifiable cause, which converted into a 20-second time penalty in race time.
The Ferrari driver confirmed his car could not handle right-hand corners properly after his spin on the last lap, and a collision with the barrier. As such, he cut chicanes to complete the race.
Applying Leclerc’s penalty drops the Ferrari driver down to eighth, promoting teammate Lewis Hamilton and Franco Colapinto up a position, into sixth and seventh, respectively.
The officials considered the possibility of a secondary breach, with Leclerc suffering mechanical damage to his car and driving it in an unsafe condition. However, the Stewards deemed there was no evidence of ‘obvious of discernible mechanical issue.’
