‘One race at a time’ for Lando Norris ahead of critical Las Vegas Grand Prix

McLaren’s Lando Norris has confirmed his approach remains ‘one race at a time’ as Briton heads into Formula 1’s Las Vegas Grand Prix with a significant points advantage.

Norris has recently regained control of the drivers championship and the McLaren driver extended his championship advantage after two dominant victories in both Mexico and Brazil, respectively.

As such, the British driver holds a 24 points advantage over his teammate Oscar Piastri, and 49 points ahead of Red Bull’s defending world champion, Max Verstappen. Including the Las Vegas race, it means there are three grand prix and a sprint race to complete, meaning a total of 83 points are up for grabs.

However, Norris has confirmed his stance heading into the final three races of the season remains the same. In the Press Conference, he said:

“Everyone knows my approach is still just one race at a time, and I’ll treat it like that until the very end. I’m enjoying the places I’m going, I’m enjoying the people I’m doing it with. I’m certainly enjoying every session, going out and obviously always trying to win.

“It’s always sweeter when you end up on the podium or you can win the race. It’s always a better feeling because that’s what we all want. So it’s been a good few races recently.

“And it is hard at times when you’re fighting and you’re in the position that we’re in at the moment as a team, between Oscar and myself, to sometimes step back and realise what you’re doing.”

Las Vegas GP Preview: Championship fight continues in Sin City ahead of final three races

However, heading into Las Vegas, Sin City has not been kind to the McLaren team in recent years. In the first outing, Norris crashed out of the inaugural race on lap three as he lost control of his car in the corners before the iconic Las Vegas Strip.

Subsequently, in 2024, the two McLarens managed to finish the race but in sixth and seventh with Norris and Piastri, respectively. It was also the race where Norris lost the title fight with Verstappen, who went on to claim his fourth consecutive world title.

Ahead of the upcoming race, Norris quipped that he was not allowed to say the team aren’t ‘favourites anymore,’ but confirms the venue has been one of the hardest races on the calendar for the Woking-based squad.

Despite his run of form, he still suspects that Las Vegas will be ‘trickier for sure,’ than the recent races. He said:

“So, from the last two years, it’s certainly been the hardest race of the year that we’ve had. So my expectations are not to the same level as Mexico, Brazil, where we’ve been performing very well for a good amount of years.

“But we’ve had an excellent year and we’ve improved in places that we’ve struggled in the past. So I’m certainly coming in with more confidence than in previous years, but not the same amount of confidence as going into the past few races that we’ve had. So you never know.

“Expectations are still high. I’m still coming here to win and to want to repeat the last few weekends that I’ve had. But I think it’s going to be trickier for sure than the last couple.”
