Norris, in his charge for the driver’s championship, has given himself a boost in the title fight as the McLaren driver snatched pole position away from the two Ferrari challengers on Saturday evening.

Norris, on his final run of Q3, went fastest with a blistering one-minute and 15.586-second lap to take the top spot on the grid, 0.262 seconds ahead of the closest Ferrari of Charles Leclerc, as Lewis Hamilton completed the top three – his highest starting position for Ferrari in a Grand Prix.

However, his teammate, Piastri, who has seemingly struggled this weekend will start the Mexican race in seventh place, having qualified in eighth. Piastri will be the first driver to benefit from Carlos Sainz’s (Williams) five-place grid penalty after he collided with Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli at the Circuit of The Americas last weekend, at the United States Grand Prix.

Additionally, the charging Dutch lion, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, could only best fifth-fastest, standing as Norris’ closest championship contender on the grid.

Following Hamilton’s best qualifying position for Ferrari, it means Verstappen will have; Leclerc, Hamilton and Mercedes’ George Russell to contend with as he chases after Norris. Additionally, he would only have Antonelli as his rear buffer to Piastri.

In terms of the championship, the Mexico City race could be a pivotal moment in the title fight. Piastri continues to lead, having lost points in recent events, with 346 points to his name. However, both Norris and Verstappen have clawed back crucial championship points.

As it stands, going into the Mexico City GP, Norris only trails Piastri by 14 points, whereas Verstappen finds himself 40 points adrift.

The Mexico City Grand Prix will get underway at 2pm on Sunday, local time (8pm GMT).
