Norris will take pole position for Sunday’s race after he put in a lap time that he stated the less he knew, the better. It marks the 14th career pole position for the Briton, and his first since the Belgian Grand Prix. It also marks the first McLaren pole in Mexico since the 1990 season, delivered by GehBerger.

He will be accompanied by the two Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, who will start amongst the top three, in second and third. It marks the highest starting position for the seven-time world champion in his tenure at Ferrari, as he will start third.

Additionally, the pole sitter will hope his position will give him a boost in the drivers’ championship as the current championship leader, and Norris’ teammate, Oscar Piastri, qualified eighth on Saturday evening as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen will start fifth.

However, there has been a change in the overall starting grid, following the conclusion of qualifying with Williams’ Carlos Sainz.

The Spaniard will serve a five-place grid penalty on Sunday after his collision with Kimi Antonelli in the United States last time out. The Williams driver dove down the inside of the Italian into turn 15 and the two made contact, spinning Antonelli off track and down the order, and Sainz retired quickly after.

It means Sainz’s seventh-place qualifying position will convert into 12th place on the grid, after serving his penalty. So, who will start where at the Mexico City Grand Prix?
