FIA confirms heat hazard at US Grand Prix

The FIA has declared that the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix as ‘a heat hazard,’ making it the second consecutive event that the governing body has declared.

F1 heads to Austin this weekend following the Singapore Grand Prix where the Woking-based McLaren squad clinched the constructors’ title, leaving the drivers’ title to be decided. 

It has officially been declared a heat hazard race, making it the second event in a row to be given this classification after the first-ever declaration at the Singapore GP. 

In the Race Director’s report, Rui Marques said: 

“In accordance with Article 26.19 of the Sporting Regulations, having received a forecast from the Official Weather Service predicting that the Heat Index will be greater than 31.0 °C at some time during the Sprint or Race at this event, a Heat Hazard is declared.”

Singapore Grand Prix declared heat hazard for first-time ever

According to BBC Weather, air temperatures are expected to reach 33° on Friday, before rising to as high as 35° on Saturday, and then decreasing to 31° on Sunday. 

According to the regulations, teams will now be required to fit the cars with cooling systems to help reduce the demand on drivers in hot conditions, which meets the provisions set out in the Technical Regulations. 

Additionally, the drivers will have the option to wear cooling vests to help aid them against the hot temperatures. If a driver opts not to wear the vest, their car will be given extra ballast in the cockpit area. 

Free Practice 1 will get underway at 12:30 local time (18:30 BST), ahead of sprint qualifying at 16:30 local (22:30 BST).
