The Silver Arrows will be heading to Austin, Texas, on the back of a dominating victory under the lights at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. However, the team believe they are heading into the weekend with an unknown about them.
George Russell took victory for the team last time out, his second of the season, and the team took their second-highest haul of points of 35, helped by Kimi Antonelli’s fifth-place finish. It is five less than their highest haul, obtained in Canada (40).
Mercedes team boss, Toto Wolff, claims their performance on Saturday and Sunday ‘showed it was no fluke,’ after their race winner led the race for all but two laps, whilst confirming the tight, competitive nature of the field. He said:
“We come off the back of a strong result in Singapore, taking victory with George and P5 for Kimi. Not only was that unexpected, our level of performance across Saturday and Sunday showed it was no fluke.
“That has been the story of the season somewhat, where it isn’t clear which team will be leading the way from weekend-to-weekend. We were also good in Azerbaijan so we are curious to see if we can maintain the step we have made with the W16 into this next run of races across the Americas.
“They are very different layouts and challenges to those two street circuits, so we are heading a little into the unknown, but that unpredictability is what makes our sport so enjoyable.”
This weekend is not typical, as it marks the fourth sprint weekend of the season, following the Chinese, Miami, and Belgian sprints earlier in the year.
As per the format, Wolff has claimed it ‘creates extra jeopardy’ as the teams and drivers will have a single hour of practice before being locked into Parc Ferme for Sprint Qualifying and the sprint itself.
Additionally, the weekend will be a moment of celebration for the Mercedes brand as they are set to celebrate 500 races with the Mercedes-AMG Safety Car in Austin.
Mercedes became an official safety car supplier in 1996 and the agreement has remained in place until this day, with the Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG being used that season and throughout the 1997 season.
More recently, Mercedes has shared Safety Car duties with Aston Martin. Both manufacturers supply the green Aston Martin Vantage or Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series safety car.
“We are also delighted to celebrate 500 races of the Mercedes-AMG Safety Car this weekend,” continued Wolff. “This milestone is a testament to the company’s commitment to the pinnacle of motorsport, and the longevity, technical innovation, and beauty of our cars.”
