Max Verstappen fastest Canadian GP FP1 as Leclerc crashes
13th June 2025Red Bull’s Max Verstappen topped the timing boards in the first practice session at the Canadian Grand Prix, as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed at turn four.

Formula 1 returned to the North American continent for the second time this season as the sport headed to Canada for the 10th round of the 2025 season, at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve.
It didn’t take long before the first yellow flag was thrown as Alpine’s Franco Colapinto slowly spun out on the exit of turn two. He was able to continue without issue.
After the first 15 minutes, the red flag was brought out for the first time by Leclerc. The Monegasque ran over the grass as he locked up the front tyre. He collected the outside barrier before he spun out and stopped on the exit of turn four.
The Ferrari driver was the fastest car out on track at the time of his crash.
Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll returned to action after he missed the Spanish Grand Prix due to pain in his hand and wrist.
How did the pack finish in the first hour?
Verstappen topped the timing boards after the first hour of practice, the Williams duo of Albon and Sainz rounded the top three, with the latter 0.082s off the pace.
The former teammates of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, for Mercedes and Ferrari, respectively, completed the top five in the order of fourth and fifth.
Isack Hadjar was the leading Racing Bulls car, in sixth, ahead of Liam Lawson, in eighth. This left McLaren’s championship contender, Lando Norris, to sandwich himself into seventh.
Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completed the top 10 in ninth and 10th place, respectively.
Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda was the fastest driver in the bottom 10, in 11th, ahead of the two Aston Martins of Fernando Alonso and Stroll, in 12th and 15th. Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli and McLaren’s championship leader, Oscar Piastri, filled the void in 13th and 14th.
Kick Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg occupied the bottom five in 16th and 20th, with the two Haas’, of Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon, in between them in 17th and 18th.
Colapinto completed the 20-car field in 19th place.
