Tsunoda did not set a timed lap in qualifying after the #22 Red Bull crashed heavily in the barrier. As per the 107% rule, the stewards have now allowed the Red Bull driver to start the grand prix.
Red Bull’s Japanese driver was on a timed lap when he lost control of his car in Q1, in between turns five and six, which sent his car spinning into the gravel before he hit the barrier and launched his car up and over in the air. The car came back down on all four wheels, albeit heavily damaged.
Fortunately, Tsunoda was relatively unharmed after the incident and was seen getting out of his car before being escorted to the medical car for precautionary checks at the FIA medical centre.
Following qualifying, where their defending world champion, Max Verstappen, secured a front row position next to McLaren’s polesitter, Oscar Piastri, the team requested the stewards to allow Tsunoda to start Sunday’s race.
The stewards confirmed they would allow the Japanese driver to start the race, having set ‘satisfactory times’ in practice during the race weekend. In their report, they said:
“The Stewards have received a request from Oracle Red Bull Racing to allow car 22 to start the Race despite failing to set a lap time in Q1.
“In accordance with Article 39.4 b) of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations, the Stewards grant permission for car 22, Yuki Tsunoda, to start the Race, as the driver has set satisfactory times in practice at this Competition.
“The car will be placed on the grid in accordance with Article 42.1 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations.”
