Oscar Piastri fastest in Emilia-Romagna GP Practice 1
16th May 2025McLaren’s Oscar Piastri has topped the opening practice session at Formula 1’s Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, ahead of teammate Lando Norris.

F1 returned this weekend with the first of three European races, the first triple header on the continent in 2025, at Imola’s iconic Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari.
Piastri, in a good run of form, returned to the top of the timing boards ahead of his teammate, Norris, to give McLaren a 1-2 finish in FP1.
Franco Colapinto returned to the sport this weekend, with the Alpine F1 Team, having replaced the Australian Jack Doohan for the next five races.
However, it’s not the only debut of the weekend as Pirelli’s C6 tyre – the softest of their range – also made its racing debut this weekend, with many drivers going out on them in their first stints.
How finished where?
Piastri set the fastest lap after the first hour of practice with a time of 1m 16.545s, 0.032s faster than Norris, who occupied second ahead of Williams’ Carlos Sainz.
Mercedes’ George Russell finished ahead of his former teammate, now-Ferrari driver, Lewis Hamilton, as the two rounded out the top five in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Alpine’s Pierre Gasly led he bottom five inside the top 10, in sixth, ahead of Max Verstappen (Red Bull), Alexander Albon (Williams) and the two Kick Sauber’s of Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg.
Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll was the fastest driver in the bottom 10 ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, in 12th and 13th. Stroll’s teammate, Fernando Alonso and Racing Bull’s Liam Lawson completed the top 15, in 14th and 15th.
This left Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda to lead the bottom five, in 16th, ahead of Alpine-debutant Colapinto. The two Haas’, Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon, occupied 18th and 20th, with Racing Bull’s Isack Hadjar getting in between the two in 19th.
