The second hour of practice began under similar conditions to the opening hour, sun and dry weather. However, the session was heavily impacted by red flags.

The first stoppage came at Alpine Jack Doohan who crashed heavily at the first corner. His car snapped out as he entered the sweeping right-hander before he spun across the track and gravel before he slammed into the barrier.

Fortunately, he was okay and climbed out of the car, albeit gingerly.

Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso was the next stoppage having beached his car at the second Degner corner, turn nine. When running continued two more red flag stops were brought out thanks to grass fires.

Mercedes’ George Russell finished the session in sixth ahead of; Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Pierre Gasly (Alpine), who finished seventh, eighth and ninth.

The Williams duo of Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon split the top 10 and bottom 10, in 10th and 11th, respectively, ahead of the Kick Sauber duo of Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto, who occupied 12th and 13th.

Haas’ two drivers, Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman, completed the top 15, in 14th and 15th.

Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli headed the bottom five, in 16th, ahead of the remaining runners of Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, in 18th and 19th. This left Alonso and Doohan to fill in the gaps, to complete the 20-car field, in 17th and 20th, respectively.
