Why is the post-season Abu Dhabi F1 test important?

The Formula 1 season is officially over but the on-track action is not as the team and drivers are back out on track with the Post-Season tests, but why are these important?

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has hosted the post-season test since 2010, and the post-season tests are fully underway. This gives the 10 teams their last opportunity to run their 2024 machines before completely shifting focus to their 2025 challengers. 

As part of the test, one car will test Pirelli’s new tyres for the upcoming season, whereas the other will run the team’s young drivers. Not all F1 drivers are obliged to participate, like Lewis Hamilton, who has yet to be released from his Mercedes contract and will miss out on the test. 

However, it remains an important test as it gives the Formula 1 drivers – who are set to switch teams – an important opportunity to bed in with their new environment. It also gives young drivers, who are gathering experience or joining an F1 team in the following season to get up to speed for their arrival.  

Crucially, the seven-time world champion will miss out on time with his new team, Ferrari. The Briton has to complete some promotional duties before exiting the team after 12 seasons. It means Hamilton’s first run in a Ferrari will be next year, at the earliest.

Other drivers who are moving teams like; Carlos Sainz, Nico Hulkenberg and Esteban Ocon will be competing in the test, bedding in with their new teams Williams, Sauber and Haas respectively.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso, alongside Hamilton, are not expected to compete in these post-season tests.

Rookies, Gabriel Bortoleto and Andrea Kimi Antonelli will get an opportunity to catch up to their fellow rookies on Tuesday, with Sauber and Mercedes respectively. 

This is because their fellow ‘rookies’ Oliver Bearman and Jack Doohan have already driven in anger around circuits with the former having the most experience with races in Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan and Brazil. Doohan goes into the test fresh from his F1 debut in the season finale, in Abu Dhabi. 

However, it’s not just the teams and drivers who will benefit from this, Pirelli will do too. As the full-time F1 drivers competing in the test will run Pirelli tyre tests which will give the tyre supplier good data which will help them determine what 2025 compounds they will need to bring to the opening races of the season next year. 

When these tests are concluded, it will draw an official end to the 2024 chapter of F1 ahead of the special car launch and pre-season test in February and the season opener in March.
