Whilst the driver’s championship was signed, sealed and delivered to the hands of Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing, the Constructors Championship was to be decided on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit.

Heading into the event, McLaren had a 21-point advantage over Ferrari for championship glory and both teams were looking to end their drought of championship glory.

McLaren had waited the longest for their championship drought to end, before securing title glory in 2024, as their last win came in 1998 at the hands of then-champion Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard.

Ferrari last won the constructors championship back in 2008 when Felipe Massa just missed out on the driver’s championship with Kimi Raikkonen.

Norris started the 2024 F1 season finale from pole position for the ninth time of his career and the Briton led the race from start to finish, despite the pressure provided by Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz.

The championship looked to be under threat as McLaren’s Oscar Piastri was spun around, from second, by Verstappen into the first corner and dropped the Australian to the back of the order. At the same time, across the first lap, Leclerc overtook several drivers to approach a top 10 position in the opening stint.

Despite this, Norris controlled the race and reacted to Sainz’s first-and-only stop, pitting and returning to the circuit in the race lead.

In the end, Norris took the chequered flag to give McLaren the constructors championship for the first time in 26 years. Ferrari’s two drivers, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc completed the podium in second and third respectively.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton joined the top three with his final doughnut on the grid in what was his 246th and final race with Mercedes before he heads to Ferrari, next year.
