It hasn’t been a straight-forward year for the now four-time world champion as Verstappen was forced to fight intensely to bring home his fourth world championship, a feat achieved in Las Vegas.

Compared to last season, Verstappen was not able to run away with the title in a season where he won all but three races. This season, the Dutchman secured seven wins in the first 10 before having a 10-race spell without a victory, from Austria to Mexico.

Going into the final race in the United States of America, Verstappen held onto a 62-point lead over his only championship rival, McLaren’s Lando Norris, with three races to go. Having qualified one position higher than Norris, the Dutchman needed to stay ahead of the Briton.

Verstappen had done just that by the chequered flag, the Dutchman and Norris finished in the same positions they started: fifth and sixth, giving Verstappen the title. This means the world champion can go into the final two races of the season; Qatar and Abu Dhabi, without the title fight in mind.

After securing the championship in Las Vegas, Verstappen has said he is “proud of how we [Verstappen & Red Bull] handled everything as a team,” he said:

“It feels incredible to win here [on Saturday] and I am so proud to win the Championship.

“It has been quite a year and I’m proud of how we handled everything as a Team. We started off the season really strong and then it became quite tough; we never wanted to give up and got the best result we could, barely made any mistakes and that is what you need to win a title. We stuck together as a Team and we pushed back really hard and came back stronger.

“I’m super proud of everyone of what we achieved and also of myself with how we have worked together this season. Today I stayed calm and overtook drivers one by one. I tried to hang in there and do my own race and we pulled it off.

“Ultimately every Championship win is different, so that also makes it really special and it really means a lot to us. I am very proud to be part of this Team, especially as we are now celebrating our fourth World Title. It’s simply lovely.”

Following the championship win, in the post-race celebrations, Verstappen revealed he has a new helmet to mark the occasion of his fourth-title win.

The new helmet is a gold-and-white design symbolised by the four stars on the back; 21, 22, 23 and 24, to mark each of his championship victories.

This is not the first time Verstappen has been gifted a celebratory helmet after securing a championship victory. Last year, Verstappen was gifted a black-and-gold helmet in Qatar to mark his third title win.
