George Russell has kept Mercedes’ impressive run of form, in Las Vegas, alive as the Briton pipped Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly to pole position.

All weekend so far, Mercedes have dominated the headlines – in terms of on-track action – as they have been the fastest car around in the Nevada state.

Qualifying was no different as Russell topped qualifying after taking the fastest time in FP3, like his teammate had done on Thursday night, going fastest in both FP1 and FP2 sessions.

Williams’ Franco Colapinto brought out the one-and-only red flag of the session with a heavy hit into the barrier, after leaving the strip, when he collided with the outside barrier at T15 before smashing into the opposing barrier.

The Argentine’s car was a wreck at a weekend when Williams did not need any further trouble from its drivers, having already fixed up their cars in Brazil last time out.

Sainz and Gasly completed the top three in second and third respectively, to round out the top three.

The Spaniard will lead the charge for Ferrari as his teammate, Charles Leclerc, qualified fourth in between Gasly and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. The Italian team looks to secure another win, since Mexico, to apply further pressure on McLaren for the constructor’s title.

In terms of the driver’s championship fight, between the only drivers in contention, Verstappen and McLaren’s Lando Norris, Verstappen has a further advantage by outqualifying his championship rival.

Heading into the event, Verstappen has a 62-point lead over Norris and the Dutchman only needs to secure three more points than the British McLaren driver to secure his fourth consecutive drivers title.

In qualifying, Verstappen was only able to best fifth place whilst Norris filtered in behind him, in sixth. As it currently stands, if the race were to end with the two championship contenders in the same position they started, Verstappen would only need to take the fastest lap – and its point – to take the title.

Hi, I'm Kamron. I created ApexMotorsports.co.uk in the dying embers of the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. It allowed me freedom to write whatever I wanted to write about which was all things motorsports, my passion. I have put a lot of effort in over the years to keep this website in its best shape and I've loved seeing the brand grow consistently, month-on-month, year-on-year. My ambition is to keep watching this brand grow into a primary outlet of news for all things motorsports whilst fueling my desire to pursue a career in sports journalism, specialising in motorsports.
