Williams Racing have confirmed Franco Colapinto will need to be ‘evaluated again’ ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, after sustaining an impact over 50G.

In qualifying, Colapinto brought out the only red flag of the session after the Argentine crashed his car into the barrier at turn 15, just after he turned off the iconic Las Vegas strip.

His contact with the outside barrier, at turn 15, sent his FW46 across the track and into the adjacent barrier, wrecking his car in the process before it dragged itself to a halt between turn 16 and turn 17.

The car sustained heavy damage with its rear-wing, front and rear-right suspension broken. The left-rear tyre was the only tyre which remained intact with the chassis of the Williams car.

As a result of the impact, reportedly to be over 50G, the medical car was deployed onto the circuit and the session was red-flagged. Thankfully, the Argentine was seen climbing out of his car and was sent straight to the medical centre for evaluation by the FIA’s medical team.

However, Williams has now confirmed Colapinto will need to be checked tomorrow before he can be cleared for the race. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Williams Racing said:

“During qualifying Franco sustained a significant impact of over 50G, requiring a medical check up.

“An impact of this magnitude is obviously significant and severe and he will need to be evaluated again tomorrow before we will know whether he is clear to race.

“Franco’s health is all that matters and we are glad he is otherwise okay. We will provide further updates when we can.”

If Colapinto is not fit to race in Las Vegas on Saturday night (Sunday morning for European viewers), it will mark the second time Williams has only run one car in a race this season.

This came at the Australian Grand Prix when Alexander Albon had to take Logan Sargeant’s car after a heavy shunt, by the London-born Thai driver, in free practice.
