Bottas hit with five-place grid penalty for Las Vegas GP

Kick Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas has been slapped with a five-place grid penalty for the Las Vegas Grand Prix for using an additional power unit component.

After 13 seasons in Formula 1, Valtteri Bottas embarks on his final three races as an F1 driver – as it currently stands – following the news he will not stay with the team next season, replaced by Gabriel Bortoleto.

However, into the final triple-header and last three races of the season, Bottas will endure a five-place grid penalty in Las Vegas for taking an additional power unit element this weekend.

In the technical delegates report, Bottas has taken his fourth new energy store of the season which is ‘not in conformity’ with the 2024 sporting regulations.

The FIA Technical Delegate, Jo Bauer said:

“The energy store used by Valtteri Bottas is the fourth (4th) of the two (2) new energy stores allowed for the 2024 Championship season and this is not in conformity with Article 28.2 of the 2024 Formula One Sporting Regulations.”

As a result, the Finn has been slapped with a five-place grid penalty for the next race in which Bottas takes part such as this weekend’s Las Vegas.

This comes after the Finnish driver had already used up an additional energy store, previously using three of the two allowed, meaning he will be hit with this penalty as per the regulations.

Any further additional elements of this nature continue to carry a five-place grid penalty.
