Red Bull’s Max Verstappen returned to the top step on a Grand Prix Sunday, at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, but where did the rest of the field finish?

Verstappen put on a performance that demonstrates exactly why he is a three-time world champion and potential four-time world champion by the end of the season. It also showed that the triple world champ is among the best drivers in wet conditions.

The Dutchman started the race down in 17th, following a five-place grid penalty for his power unit, and worked his way through the field to take the lead on lap 43. From there the Dutchman was untroubled as he extended a gap before taking home his 62nd career win.

Alpine also enjoyed a dream finish in Brazil as Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly, who had started the race fourth and 13th respectively, completed their first double podium of the season in second and third.

Mercedes’s George Russell was best of the rest and occupied fourth, avoiding punishment for a technical infringement and being reprimanded for the failed aborted start, the same as McLaren’s Lando Norris. Russell was accompanied by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc who finished fifth.

Although he started in pole position, Norris finished the race down in sixth and now remains the only driver to remain in contention for the driver’s championship. However, this looks to be a very tall order for the remaining three races of the season with Verstappen having a mathematical chance of taking it in Las Vegas, next time out.

Visa Cash App RB’s Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson enjoyed a points finish in Sao Paulo, with a seventh and ninth place finish respectively. This left McLaren’s Oscar Piastri to squeeze in between the two drivers as Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton took home the final point in 10th.

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez missed out on a points finish in Brazil by under a second as he finished behind Hamilton in 11th. Haas’ super sub Oliver Bearman, who replaced an unwell Kevin Magnussen, finished 12th in the race order.

Kick Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu finished 13th and 15th respectively, leaving Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso to split the two drivers in 14th. They were the last three drivers of the running order.

Disqualified, non-starters and retirements

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Williams’ Franco Colapinto had started the race but the two drivers both retired as a result of crashes. Sainz was the last to crash out at, turn eight, on lap 39, whereas Colapinto brought out the red flag for his incident at turn 13 on lap 32.

Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg beached on drainage at turn one, on lap 28, prompting the Virtual Safety Car to be deployed. He was later disqualified for receiving assistance from the track marshals to return to the track.

Williams’ Alexander Albon and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll were non-starters for the Brazilian race.

Albon had a heavy crash in qualifying and, with limited time between the sessions and the race, the team were forced to withdraw him from the Grand Prix. Additionally, Stroll did not start the race after he beached his AMR24 in the turn four gravel on the formation lap.
