Sainz to start from pit lane for Brazil GP after qualifying crash
3rd November 2024Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz is set to start the Brazilian Grand Prix from the pit lane after the Spaniard had to take new parts for the race, following his qualifying crash.

Sainz made it to Q2 for the Brazilian GP but he would go no further after the Spaniard crashed into the barrier at turn two. As it was a heavy shunt, there were concerns the team may not get the car fixed in time.
As qualifying overshot its usual timeframe, after it was rescheduled due to Saturday’s heavy downpour, the teams and drivers up and down the pit lane had limited opportunity to get the car turned around for the Grand Prix.
Despite this, the team needed to install new power unit components onto the #55 SF-24 and this has forced them to start the race from the pit lane.
Sainz will be taking his fifth; internal combustion engine, turbo charger, motor generator unit – heat and kinetic, energy store and control electronics. He had also taken his sixth Gearbox Case and Cassettes, driveline, gear change components and auxiliary components.
All of the changes to the power unit and gearbox were replaced without the approval of the FIA Technical Delegate in Parc Ferme conditions.

In a statement, the FIA said:
“Power Unit elements in excess of the permitted number for the 2024 Championship season were used. This is a breach of Article 28.2 and incurs a grid penalty.
“RNC components and auxiliary components in excess of the permitted number for the 2024 Championship season were used. This is a breach of Article 29.2 and incurs a grid penalty.
“As the PU elements and RNC and auxiliary components were changed without prior approval of the Technical Delegate in Parc Fermé this is not in accordance with Articles 40.3 and 40.9 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations.
“Car 55 is therefore required to start the race from the pit lane per Article 40.9 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations.”
The Spaniard had originally qualified 14th for the race but now it has been confirmed Sainz will start from the pit lane.
