Williams had a gruelling break between qualifying, on Sunday morning, and the Brazilian Grand Prix as the team mechanics were sent to work repairing both Albon’s and Franco Colapinto’s cars.
The two drivers were involved in their own separate crashes during qualifying, as a result of the challenging conditions, with Colapinto crashing at turn three whilst Albon crashed at turn one.
Williams has now confirmed, after assessing the damage to Albon’s car, that the required work could not be completed within the short window between qualifying and the race. As such the team has removed Albon from the Grand Prix.

In a statement, the team said:
“In qualifying earlier this morning, ahead of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Williams Racing sustained significant accident damage to both cars following incidents in the inclement weather conditions.
“Unfortunately, after assessing the extensive damage sustained to Alex Albon’s car, the required repairs could not be completed in the short window of time between Qualifying and the Race.
“The team is therefore forced to withdraw Alex’s car for the remainder of the Grand Prix.
“Franco Colapinto will compete in this afternoon’s Grand Prix.”
Whilst Albon is not competing, Williams will still be hoping for some points on the board with Colapinto as the team were able to fix that car.
The Argentinian will start the race 16th, in between Haas’ Oliver Bearman – in 15th – and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, in 17th, in what will be the closest event to a home race for the Williams driver.
