Formula 2 unveil new generation of car ahead of 2024 season
31st August 2023Formula 2 have unveiled their newest generation of car on Thursday, August 31, which will be used in the upcoming seasons of the junior category.
The new look, which is expected to be raced in the upcoming 2024, 2025 and 2026 championships, will give younger drivers the best preparation to enter Formula 1.
The car is closely designed to encourage closer racing as the nose, front and rear wings have been redesigned to allow this, with a closer design to the current generation of F1 cars.
The 2024 challenger has been designed to comply with the FIA 2024 specifications with braking, steering effort and ergonomics to help accommodate a range of drivers, improving accessibility.
Under the covers, the cars will be powered by a 3.4 litre turbo-charged Mecachrome engine and will include new features to allow use of the Aramco synthetic sustainable fuel which will be introduced in the 2025 campaign.
For next season, the cars will continue to run on the Aramco 55% bio-sourced sustainable fuel that was introduced in 2023.
The new generation of cars will continue to use marshalling systems such as the Virtual Safety Car and Drag Reduction System but the electronics have been enhanced with a new Vehicle Control Unit.
The car is reported to have completed a successful shakedown in July, in Varano, Italy, at the hands of F2 driver Tatiana Calderon. However, the car will continue to undergo a development programme to ensure reliability and use of more sustainable fuels.
Before the end of the year, one car will be delivered to the teams and the second one will be provided in the middle of January in 2024. After the delivery, the teams will be able to have a shakedown prior to the official pre-season test.
