Alpine F1 announces Ocon departure at the end of 2024

Alpine F1 have announced one of their French drivers, Esteban Ocon is set to leave the team at the end of the season after five seasons with the team.

On Monday, Alpine announced Ocon will part ways from the team at the end of the 2024 season as his current contract comes to an end, at the end of the year.

The Ocon-Alpine partnership spanned five seasons, from 2020 to 2024, including a time when the team ran under the Renault name. During the Frenchman’s time at the team, he secured his maiden win at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix – it was Alpine’s first too.

In addition, Ocon obtained two podium finishes with the team, at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix and the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix where he finished second and third respectively.

On the announcement, Ocon said:

“It’s been a significant period of my life to be racing at this team in Formula 1. While I’ve been here for five years as a full-time racing driver, my professional career started at Enstone back when I was a teenager, so it will always be a special place for me.

“We have had some great moments together, some tough moments as well, and I am certainly grateful to everyone at the team for these memorable times.

“I will announce my plans very soon but, in the meantime, my full focus is on delivering on track for this team and having a successful remainder of the season.”

Although Ocon was out of contract at the end of the year, the announcement finds itself in the wake of the team’s troubled time at the Monaco Grand Prix.

On the first lap of the race, before Kevin Magnussen and Sergio Perez brought out the red flag, Ocon and Gasly came together at the exit of turn seven.

The contract left Ocon’s car ruined and unable to continue on when the race restarted.

Reports, such as F1, state the Monaco incident was not an instigating factor in the decision not to renew his contract but it didn’t help strengthen his stance with the team.

“We would like to firstly thank Esteban for his commitment to the team for the past five years,” said Alpine Team Principal Bruno Famin on Ocon’s departure. “During his time, we have celebrated some fantastic moments together, the best of which coming at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix with a memorable race win.

“We still have 16 races to complete in 2024 together with a clear objective: to continue to work tirelessly as a team to push for the best on-track results.

“We wish Esteban the very best for the next chapter of his driving career when that moment comes.”

Alpine have confirmed they will announce their 2025 driver line up in ‘due course.’
