F1 Report Card 2023: Another season at the back for Haas

F1 Report Card 2023: Another season at the back for Haas

19th December 2023 0 By Kamron Kent

Despite a haul of points, it was yet another poor year for the Haas team as they finished the 2023 season at the back of the order.

It’s been the first time since 2021, when the team ran the Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin driver line-up, where they have failed to climb the team table. After collecting 12 points out of 22 races, the American team finished at the bottom of the table just missing out on ninth by four points.

Choosing experience over youth, the team hoped their revived driver line-up, Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen, would have benefitted their performance. While that could’ve been the case, the team simply didn’t have the car to perform for the lower tier set of points on a more regular basis.

In the driver’s standings, Hulkenberg’s return to Formula One saw him secure two-point scoring race weekends with his best finish in seventh, in Australia. Whereas Magnussen only managed to secure three points from three one-point finishes in Saudi Arabia, Miami and Singapore.

The car was quick over a single lap, securing several Q3 positions across the season which included a provisional front-row start in Canada, taking advantage of the wet conditions. The front-row start was then taken away from him for a red flag breach.

Despite the decent qualifying pace, the cars fell back down the order on race day removing all the impressive work the drivers had put in on the Saturday.

In the head-to-heads, Hulkenberg dominated his teammate in both qualifying and on race days. In terms of better Grand Prix results, Hulkenberg outscored his teammate 13 to nine and 15 to seven, in qualifying.

Considering the downfall in performance and points from 2022 to 2023, the team needs to produce a better car for 2024. Otherwise, they will just fall back on another driver line-up change which may see similar results.

Summary: Haas hoped experience over youth would benefit them in the standings but that hasn’t worked out this season.
