F1 Report Card 2023: Alfa Romeo cruise along at the back
19th December 2023In their final F1 season, for the foreseeable future, Alfa Romeo Sauber cruised their way through the 2023 season just beating Haas to ninth in the constructors.
2023 was a rather invisible season for the Alfa Romeo team as their results were very hit-and-miss regarding points scored.
Finnish driver, Valtteri Bottas opened up the points tally for the team with four points, in the season opener. This was followed by Guanyu Zhou who scored his first two points of the season in Melbourne, at the third race event.
In any race event this season, Bottas’ haul of four points was the maximum obtained by a single driver. However, the team did walk away with a double-point finish in Qatar with six points collected (four by Bottas and two by Zhou).
Comparing their head-to-head statistics, Bottas just edged out Zhou in the races with a score of 12-10 whereas he outpaced the young Chinese driver in qualifying by 15-7.
It’s an encouraging statistic for Zhou, who will be aiming for a seat when Audi arrives in 2026 but on the other side of the same coin, it will be a concern for the Finn, for the same reason.
After the season, both drivers finished 2023 in 15th and 18th amid the driver’s standings. Whereas, Alfa Romeo finished ninth on 16 points, nine points behind Alpha Tauri yet four ahead of Haas.
As the Alfa Romeo and Sauber partnership embarked on their final season together in 2023, eyes amongst fans and the media will be pointed towards Audi’s arrival.
With two seasons still left to compete, the team will have some work to do to establish themselves as a regular member of the midfield, before the arrival of the German manufacturer.
