F1 Report Card 2023: Alpine’s less-than-optimal season
15th December 20232023 wasn’t the best of years for the Alpine team as it suffered a mediocre season amid teammate crashes, higher management problems and summer-break sackings.
Alpine were ambitious at their livery-reveal where people associated with the brand unveiled the two cars, both equipped with a different colour scheme. However, the showcase of their car, in London, was probably the team’s very few highlights of the season.
Nevertheless, there were a couple of positives to come from their 2023 campaign, which ended in sixth among the constructors whilst the drivers finished 11th and 12th (Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon, respectively) with only four points between them.
Those few positive moments came from podium finishes for both Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly, in Monaco and Zandvoort respectively. But, that was it really for their positives, the rest of the season was plagued with behind-the-scenes trouble and a lacklustre performance.
Ahead of the season, it was announced that Gasly would partner with, former childhood friend, Ocon at Alpine. For many who knew about their background, it was expected their old wounds would resurface. Fortunately, for Alpine, they hadn’t.
But the sport only had to wait three rounds before the two came together, in Australia, at the final restart. Then there was the outburst over the team radio in Japan where Gasly was ordered to let Ocon by on the final lap, the former was not happy with the order.
In the early part of the season, Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi publicly ripped into the F1 operation which wouldn’t have helped morale.
This was soon followed up with a reshuffle in the F1 senior management hierarchy as Otmar Szafnauer, former Team Principal and the team’s former Sporting Director Alan Permane were sacked heading into the summer break.
The team seemingly still have a long way to go to reach, and complete, their 100-race plan which was set out in 2022.
