F1 2023 Report Card: Williams excelled in 2023 under new leadership

Williams excelled in 2023 by lifting themselves off the bottom of the pile, finishing seventh in the constructors, and into the mid-field led by Alexander Albon.

It was a relatively redeeming year for the Williams team as they continued to build on their journey by pulling themselves off the bottom of the order. Over the last few seasons, the Wantage-based team has found themselves at the bottom of the pecking order, or thereabouts. However, in 2023 they catapulted into the mid-field.

In their first season under new leadership, it has been a promising start with former Mercedes man James Vowles at the helm, following Jost Capito’s retirement at the end of last season.

Compared to last season, where the team only obtained a measly eight points, the haul of 28 points would be a change of scenery going into 2024.

Understandably, the bulk of these points came from former Red Bull driver, Alexander Albon who has thrived under his leadership role as the more seasoned driver compared to his American rookie, and partner, Logan Sargeant who struggled.

Albon secured eight point-scoring results across the season to finish 13th on the Drivers Standings with his best results of seventh in both Canada and Italy (Monza).

Sergeant, on the other hand, only scored one point in his second home race of the season in Austin, Texas for the United States Grand Prix. Even that came after both Mercedes Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc were disqualified for excessive plank wear.

At the same time, Albon thrashed Sargeant in qualifying. The London-born driver out-qualified his teammate in every single race event this season – a statistic the young American will not want to repeat next season.

Understandably, the pressure will be on Sargeant next year as he will embark on his sophomore season in 2024, no longer under the ‘he’s only a rookie’ banner. The Miami-born driver will need to perform better in the upcoming season if he wants to keep his seat.

This promising result, in Vowles’ first season leading the team, is a great foundation to build upon.

Summary: A much-needed return to the midfield as the team continues rebuilding.
